BME Seminars - Stéphane Avril

Seminar announcement flyer

We are pleased to announce that our next OpenYourMind seminar will be given by Stéphane AVRIL, Professor & Department Head, Director of the Center for Biomedical and healthcare Engineering – CIS, Deputy Director of INSERM U1059 – SAINBIOSE and ERC consolidator grant - Biolochanics. The seminar will be held this Friday, 2/12/2016 between 1:30 pm and 3 pm in Amphi Fournel at ENSAM ParisTech (151, Boulevard de l’Hopital, 75013 Paris). The seminar topic will be “How biomechanics can assist cardiovascular surgery?”.

Stéphane Avril is interested in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases by studying the mechanical properties of blood vessels and decoding their biological mechanisms using engineering tools. The lecture will focus on aortic aneurysm which is a pathology which needs to be treated by surgery in case of high risks of rupture. After experiments and calculations on numerous patients, a software is now proposed to cardiovascular surgeons for detecting the signs of arterial instability using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and for making a secure pre-operative planning on patients with complex aneurysms. The lecture will take from classical biomechanics (analysis of deformations and stresses) to mechanobiology which aims at predicting the changes in the microstructure of the vessels.
