For your last week of BME seminars next week, in addition to the talk given by Yohan Payan (June 10th 2016), we will also have the pleasure of hosting a seminar by Marius Linguraru, Principal Investigator in the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation at Children's National Health System, and Associate Professor of Radiology and Pediatrics at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences of George Washington University in Washington, DC. The conference will take place between 1:30 pm and 3 pm at Arts et Métiers ParisTech (151 boulevard de l’Hôpital, 75013 Paris) on Thursday June 9th and will be held in the lecture theatre Bézier. The seminar topic will be “Computational Anatomy of the Abdomen”.

When presented three-dimensional patient image data, such as computed-tomography (CT), radiologists typically analyze them organ-by-organ and slice-by-slice until the entire image data are covered. This allows detecting multi-diseases from multi-organs. Diagnosis also relies on the comprehensive analysis of groups of organs and quantitative measures of tissue, as the volumes and shapes of organs can be indicators of disorders. However, medical image analysis has traditionally focused on organ or disease-based applications. Recent methodological developments support the migration toward the automated simultaneous analysis of multiple organs for comprehensive computer-aided diagnosis or pre-operative planning and guidance. The presentation will exemplify how anatomical and physiological priors in medical image data, such as shape and appearance, can be incorporated in computational anatomy to analyze abdominal organs. The implementation of models of inter-organ relations will be described via prediction-based probabilistic atlases and hierarchical statistical shape models. These general theoretical models have wide applicability from computer vision problems applied to facial analysis to modeling the human body.
